Nova: New educational cloud computing project for European rural schools

CESGA COORDINATES AN EUROPEAN PROJECT WHERE EUROPEAN RURAL SCHOOLS FROM 6 CONTRIES WORK WITH CLOUD COMPUTING TO IMPROVE TRAINING AND COLLABORATION BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS.

  • The Galician Ministry of Education and Culture and the Agency for the Technological Modernisation of Galicia participate as associated partners in the project 'RuralSchoolCloud', in which Spanish schools, together with schools from Denmark, Greece, Italy, Macedonia and United Kingdom will experience with methodologies and tools in the cloud.
  • Galicia Supercomputer Centre will coordinate the initiative that takes advantage of advanced ICT initiatives designed for rural schools, as  the Galician experience based on cloud computing set up with IT company Balidea, in collaboration with Galician government and 4 rural schools.

"RuralSchoolCloud. Cloud computing for School Networking & Learning"project will study methodologies and innovative ICT tools in the field of the education in rural schools to improve training and collaboration among students and teachers.

The Centre of Supercomputación of Galicia (CESGA) together with Educational Technology research group from the University of Santiago de Compostela- will coordinate the initiative, that will benefit from previous cloud computing experiences such as "Rede de Escolas na Nube", set up in collaboration with Galicia government in 23 small schools -4 networks- in Galicia, which has earned prestigious prizes like the EducaRed in 2011, Best entrepreneur award 2013 awarded by the Professional School of Engineering in Computing of Galicia (CPEIG) or the I Computer World Iberoamerican Prize for best ICT project in inclusion 2012.

The initiative will count with the support from the computer company Balidea Consulting & Programming and of the technological company HP, that collaborate also in initiatives precedents in this field. The rest of partners belong to educational institutions of Denmark, Greece, Italy, Macedonia and United Kingdom with direct relation with educational centres located in rural, dispersed areas (such as islands, in Denmark).

Exchange of experiences

RuralSchoolCloud will be a two years initiative and will be based in the exchange of experiences between rural schools from 6 European countries, as well as between the agents involved in designing innovative programs and provide online collaboration environments for students and teachers. The project will design a methodology and tools to collaborate, in which they will take advantage of the best solutions developed in previous national or regional projects, working on new possibilities of cloud computing and other ICT solutions that could benefit these type of schools, to accomodate their different educational systems, school levels and technology accessibility.

The methodological and technological solutions developed will be tested by at least 12 schools (elementary, primary and secondary) involved in the project, a minimum of two centres by each country, with the object to achieve a greater collaboration between these centres and an improvement of the quality of the education.
