E-hospital – e-learning opportunities for adult patients during hospitalisation in health-care institutions

EHospital is a project financed by the European Commission under the Socrates/Grundtvig1 program, involving educational institutions in Austria, France, Germany, Poland, Switzerland and Spain, under the coordination of the Austrian institution Die Berater.
On the Spanish participants are involved the Innovation and Educational Technology Group at the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Supercomputing Center of Galicia E-learning Area. Likewise, the Spanish case for the development of the project has the collaboration of the Hospital Universitario Juan Canalejo of A Coruña.
This project aims to provide training through e-learning in adult patients hospitalized for long.
To develop the project through e-learning CESGA played the role of expert in e-learning technologies, analyzing the hardware and software options most appropriate for the experience, in light of the needs analysis of target groups, and the reality of the hospitals. It was considered to use Dokeos as a basic tool, an open source web-based platform, as support for the training activities of the six pilot projects and the collaborative work between the partners. Other communication tools joined this platform, real-time accessibility software (mouse emulators, voice recognition software, etc..) collaborative work (webinars, collaborative editing of documents), to form, a flexible, dynamic and appropriate solution for each proposed training. All participating partners also played a key role in the creation and definition of the technologies and strategies used in each of the pilots, since they were the ones who faced the circumstances or conditions of each student and hospital.
In the experience carried out in Spain takes place a close coordination between the two partners, Cesga and the Research Group in Educational Technology at the USC, with the necessary cooperation and decided of the Hospital Juan Canalejo, from A Coruña, which allowed achieving very positive results. USC Cesga and designed a group-oriented learning experience for the students group designated in hospital, but additionally the USC got institutionalization of the experience as a proper title of specialization for hospitalized adults.
At the end of the course students were given a double degree: a certificate of participation or of improvement of the training, (depending on its outcome). One of the achievements of the experience in Spain lies precisely in that this title (born from the pedagogical design of E-Hospital) is now part of the official catalog of courses offered by USC to hospitalized adults.

- eHospital was awarded with the Computerworld award in 2007, provided by a relevant publication of the Telecommunications sector, which highlighted the work of the Computing Service of the Juan Canalejo Hospital. The award honors the hospital for the impact on Galicia’s citizens from the e-learning project for patients with long hospital stays. Guillermo Vazquez, team coordinator, received the award in Santiago under the II Foro de Modernización TIC.
- The European project eHospital was awarded with the most prestigious award for adult education granted by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Austria. eHospital initiative was regarded as the most innovative potential for adult education among 66 proposals submitted for the award and were judged by a panel of experts and subjected to the public vote. The prize was awarded by the Austrian Minister for Education, Mrs. Claudia Schmied at a ceremony attended by the project coordinator, D. Holger Bienzle. Innovation 2008 category
- European Lifelong Learning Award, prestigious award from the European Commission, who selected the e-Hospital as one of the three most outstanding Grundtvig projects in Europe, in recognition of his contribution to innovation and creativity: Grundtvig Silver Award – e-learning while in Hospital, 2009.
- The Observatory of Good University Practices and Social Commitment of Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI) promoted by the UNESCO, United Nations University (UNU) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), selected the Spanish pilot study as an example of “Good practice “.
