Project Description
TRAFAIR – Understanding Traffic Flows to Improve Air quality
Period: 2018-11-01 – 2020-10-31 (24 months).
Funded by: Comisión Europea
Program: Connecting Europe Facility 2014-2020
Call for Projects: Telecom Calls for Proposals 2017
TENtec number: 2017-EU-IA-0167
Project objectives:
1. Define a standard set of metadata capable of representing urban maps of air quality.
2. Provide real-time estimates of air pollution in the city using low-cost sensors and combining their measurements with those of the measurement stations of the regulatory authorities to build an informative map of the different levels of pollution in 6 urban areas.
3. To develop an urban air quality prediction service based on meteorological predictions and traffic flows using HPC (High Performance Computing) technologies to calculate the estimate of the diffusion of pollutants in the urban area. Given that this model can also be applied to hypothetical traffic circulation scenarios, the developed model can be used to test new circulation hypotheses (such as changes in vehicle fleet, increases in low emission vehicles, changes in the urban traffic management in cities, …) and study the impacts on air quality generated under the different scenarios.
4. Publish the data in an open data repository describing the urban air quality maps in 6 European cities in which the service will be implemented during the project period: Zaragoza (600,000 inhabitants), Florence (382,000), Modena (185,000) ), Livorno (160,000), Santiago de Compostela (95,000) and Pisa (9,000). The data sets, including the metadata, will be published in catalogs collected in the European Data Portal.
Benefits of the Project: TRAFAIR will produce concrete benefits for citizens, businesses and European administrations through a service that will raise the levels of awareness about the quality of air that we breathe on a daily basis and will provide public administrations with a fundamental tool with which to address the challenges of air quality in urban environments.
Partners in TRAFAIR:
They are partners in TRAFAIR – Universities, Local and Regional Italian and Spanish Administrations and a Supercomputing Center.
University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Università degli Studi de Firenze, University of Santiago de Compostela, Comune di Modena, Regione Toscana, Concello de Santiago de Compostela, CESGA Foundation, University of Zaragoza, Lepida SpA.
Role of CESGA in TRAFAIR:
CESGA will participate actively in
1) use our HPC resources to allow citizens and administrations to have a map of air quality and traffic flow in the city of Santiago de Compostela
2) obtain predictions of air quality and traffic flow in the next few days, similar to how it is done in other cities, and that allows to take appropriate measures
3) generate parallel open source software that is alternative to existing proprietary solutions
For this we will collaborate in:
1) the definition and organization of the urban sensor network for the city of Santiago de Compostela,
2) the parallelization of an open source model for the calculation of air pollution that serves as an alternative to existing proprietary solutions
3) the deployment of a model of air quality and traffic flow for the city of Santiago de Compostela,
4) the development of web and mobile applications for the representation of the obtained information that may be useful to citizens and administrations
5) support for the implementation of the solution in an HPC environment
