  • Service description

The data layer is the basic principle of organisation of a GIS. Defining the data or the different layers of data will allow for later combinations with these data in order to produce geographic representations. A comprehensive GIS data base includes layers of physical features such as roads, rivers, etc. as well as layers of defined characteristics such as municipal boundaries. In addition, GIS permits the creation of new data layers based on existing ones and allows for the incorporation of thematic information such as aerial photos, tele-observation data, etc. A GIS facilitates the integration of these different groups of data within a common framework defined by a geographic coordinate system. It also permits the combination of different types of data, the creation of new information, or its analysis.
